The Last Surgeon

From Michael Palmer, master of medical suspense, comes a shocking thriller entwining a flawed doctor, a ruthless psychopath and high-level secrets.

Dr. Nick Garrity, a combat surgeon suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, runs a mobile clinic dispensing medical treatment to the underprivileged in D.C. and Baltimore. From this vantage, he searches for his war buddy, Umberto Vasquez, who was sent on a secret mission four years ago and hasn’t been seen since. Nick was told his friend simply disappeared, but he doesn’t believe it.

Nor does psych nurse Jillian Coates believe that her sister, ICU nurse Belle, took her own life, though every bit of evidence indicates she did. Every bit but one: Belle left a subtle clue that ties her to Nick Garrity.

Together, Nick and Jillian determine that one by one, everyone in the operating room of a fatally botched case is dead or dying. Their discoveries pit them against a highly paid assassin, a master at making murder appear not to be murder at all. As doctor and nurse move closer to the terrifying secret behind the killings, the assassin is given a new directive: his mission will not be complete until Coates and Garrity, the last surgeon, are dead.

A medical thriller???

Given the write up, I was really disappointed with this book. It's not memorable for the most part, except for the plight of those who are the victims. The main characters are dull and the romantic thread is trite. Simply not what it was described to be.

Michael Palmer's done it again. Every page in this novel is full of excitement and intrigue. I couldn't put it down! I love the way the author develops the plot and the characters. I hope we'll be reading more about Nick and Jillian. I also love the shorter chapters - makes for easier reading. Excellent read!

Sad but true....

A keen perspective on how men who serve this country are left without resources after being used up by their service. Not so far out to be untrue... a moving story and good read with a plot twist at the end. Worth reading.
