The Postmistress

It is 1940, and radio broadcaster Frankie Bard, reporting from war-ravaged Europe, knows what many back home refuse to believe: it’s just a matter of time before America enters the fray. Meanwhile in Cape Cod, newlywed Emma Fitch is bereft since her physician husband, Will, left to help ease the suffering in England. She doesn’t know about the letter he gave postmistress Iris James…or that Frankie, too, has a missive she carries with her until the day fate lands her on Emma’s doorstep.

How these three extraordinary women deal with the loss of innocence in a world gone crazy is the reason Sarah Blake’s The Postmistress, filled with stunning parallels to our lives today, is a novel that stays with you long after you turn the last page.

I actually really enjoyed this book!

Why did I like it when nobody else seemed to?? Maybe partly I felt comfortable with the Cape Cod setting, as I grew up in New England and vacationed there many times. have also read a LOT of WWII fiction, and this was a welcome addition because it did have interesting strong female characters -- the Postmistress herself and the journalist working with Edward R. Murrow in London -- and then the lost-in-her-own-world doctor's wife, so fragile... And apparently there are some fact-based aspects of the story, which always makes it more interesting (and makes me want to find out more -- like, that enemy-sub watcher -- was he based on a real person?). Okay; so the book probably isn't a contemporary classic or "great literature" -- but I would certainly recommend it as a good read. Take it to the beach -- if it's Cape Cod, so much the better!

I tried and tried to read this book but just could not get past the first chapter. I wish I had read the Reviews before I ordered it. I will not finish the book....

Very Disappointing
April 29, 2010

This story was very disappointing. It was a book to be endured not enjoyed. I've read too many excellent books about World War II and the people who lived through it to give this one a decent review. It was a story that went back and forth and ultimately went nowhere. It was a little story with little characters and very little to say.

Interesting

Frankie's description of the people trying to escape was chilling, because we do know what happened to them. It was interesting to read how people prepared for or disregarded the coming war.
