From award-winning screenwriter Belinda Bauer comes Blacklands, a stunning debut novel about a chilling cat-and-mouse game that begins when a boy sends a coded message to a convicted killer in jail. For young Steven, it isn’t a game; his family hasn’t been the same since his uncle's murder. But for the prisoner Avery, the letters are a chance to wield power once more. Even as Steven tries to get Avery to pinpoint his uncle’s gravesite, Avery leads him on a twisted treasure hunt across the moor, feeding him just enough data to keep the game going. Then, Steven makes a mistake. When Avery learns that the letters are from a 12-year-old, his game turns serious…and he decides it’s time to meet his pen pal for the first—and final—time….

Blacklands was not what I expected. I had hoped for a real page-turner, but what I read was laboriously slow in achieving its end.

It was very difficult to get into this book. The characters weren't that memorable and the plot as it was just dragged. It's in the donation bag now. Someone else might like it but it wasn't my cup of tea.
