Making Rounds with Oscar

What makes a pet special? A nursing home staff learned the poignant answer when the kitten they adopted grew into a cat with an extraordinary gift. Always a comforting presence at the Steere Nursing Center in Providence, Rhode Island, it became apparent to doctors and staff that Oscar had the uncanny ability to predict when residents were approaching death. Soon his mere presence at a patient’s bedside was indication enough, giving staff members adequate time to inform loved ones. Oscar also provided companionship and comfort to those who would otherwise have died alone.

With profiles of residents and staff, Making Rounds With Oscar is a touching reminder of the mysterious and wondrous ways animals add meaning to our lives.

Know someone who is dealing/has dealt with a loved-one who has dementia?
August 13, 2010

Having watched my mother take care of my grandmother throughout her demise with Alzheimer's disease, I can say that this book pretty much covers what can be expected at different stages. The author, an actual doctor, uses the story of the cat, Oscar, as the vehicle for describing how the disease pans out. Buy this one for someone you know that is going through that struggle with a loved one.

A Keeper

This book will join my small collection of books that I actually keep because I may want to reread it someday in the future when I may need it. It affirmed my belief that everything I know about life I learned from a cat.

Everybody Should Read This Book
March 27, 2010

As we will all die someday, we should all read this book to have an idea of the decisions we should make for ourselves and relieve our families from the burden of making for us. We should all be so lucky as to have an Oscar escort us out of this world. I just hope there is another Oscar waiting on the other side.

Should be a must read for any health professional
March 25, 2010

This book was one of the best I've read concerning the human/animal bond. I can only hope that in my final hours I would have an Oscar to be with me. As a social work educator and one who has worked in the health care setting, I would love to see this as mandatory reading for all who are planning on a career in the medical fields. This book helps to emphasize the "care" in caring and demnostrates that even small efforts can make a big difference. I give this book two thumbs up.
