Barefoot Contessa Back to Basics

No one entertains like the Barefoot Contessa—unless it’s cooks who’ve gathered at the feet of the contessa herself to soak up the secrets to her easy, elegant gatherings. Now, in her companion cookbook to her new Food Network® series of the same name, she gives home cooks everywhere plenty of reasons to celebrate.

Whether it’s a big event or a more intimate affair, Ina Garten’s more than 75 new recipes will most certainly delight your guests. To delight the cook, however, Ina offers ten no-cook things to serve with drinks and to serve as dessert, four ways to zest a lemon and grate parmesan cheese, among other hard-earned cook’s tips, plus her own top ten flavor boosters. “Many dishes that I make rely on one or two ingredients to really amp up the flavor at the end, and it’s almost always an ingredient that’s already in the dish,” she says. She shows you how to ensure that you “serve your guests something absolutely delicious” every time, simply by adding a last-minute pinch of this or splash of that.

Ina even helps you arrange the flowers to look their freshest, set the table like a pro and consider all the other little touches that make an ordinary affair extraordinary. Color photos.

Elegant food without a lot of fuss
September 05, 2010

I like Ina. Her recipes are focused on presenting the main ingredient at it's best, as opposed to burying it under a gallon of seasonings. This cookbook has become one of my favorites for the fact that it allows me to make knock 'em dead dinners with very little effort. Current favorites include Scallops Provencal, a to die for dish of scallops, butter, white wine, and scallions. One caveat: Ina has access to a lot of fabulous stuff to cook with (sea scallops, truffle butter, etc), so those of you (myself included) who are not located near a high end grocery may have trouble sourcing a few of the ingredients. Regardless, get the book. You'll be glad you did!
