Heart-Shaped Box

A multiple-award winner for his short fiction, New York Times bestselling author Joe Hill immediately vaulted into the top echelon of dark fantasists with Heart-Shaped Box. A blood-chilling roller-coaster ride of a novel, he outdoes even you-know-who with this gothically twisted tale of Judas Coyne, an aging death-metal rock god haunted in the strangest way by a love gone sour.

Heavy metal specter…

Coyne is a collector of the macabre: a cookbook for cannibals…a used hangman’s noose…a trepanned skull…a snuff film. So naturally, when he learns there’s a ghost for sale on the Internet, he doesn't think twice. For a thousand dollars, Jude will become the proud owner of a dead man’s suit, said to be haunted by a restless spirit. He isn’t afraid. He has spent a lifetime coping with ghosts—of an abusive father, of the lovers he callously abandoned, of the bandmates he betrayed. What’s one more? But what UPS delivers to his door in a black heart-shaped box is no imaginary or metaphorical ghost, no benign conversation piece. It’s the real thing.

A masterwork brimming with relentless thrills and acid terror, Heart-Shaped Box will have you riveted in your seat praying for some very serious ghostbusters to help you out. “A top-notch piece of horror fiction.” (Time).

Not So Much

It wasn't as good as I hoped. He needs to put a little humor into the story, as his father does. It cuts down on the gore. We'll see how the next book does and then decide if he'll be on my list of authors.

Mediocre

I was interested to see how well the son of my favorite author would fare when I ordered this book. I think he has great potential, and if fact was correct after finishing HORNS, but this particular book was just not that great. It started out pretty good, I was drawn in to the characters, the plot was catching my hold....until it all seemed to fizzle out around the middle. I got bored, and had to force myself to continue on. The end redeemed itself just marginally, and was expected. All in all, it wasn't the worst book I've ever read, far from it, but by far wasn't the best either. Although, the writer does have potential. And he shows it in his next novel in which I highly reccomend. He may have gotten a slow start but I believe he can live up to his father's shadow.
