An Epic Conclusion That Really Pulls the Overarching Story Together

What a great novel! This novel is more subtle than the first two, more openly philosophical in its exploration of the underlying foundation of the great war brewing between Heaven and Lord Asriel. The secret of Lyra's prophesied choice is clever and satisfying. The ending is simultaneously touching and gut-wrenching.

Pullman's "The Golden Compass" is a very good, almost great book. What happened after that, I'm not sure. "The Subtle Knife" is ponderous and forgettable, warranting 3 stars at most. "The Amber Spyglass," though, is a preposterous waste of paper. I'd give it no stars if that rating were possible. We are supposed to believe that the most powerful creature in the universe can be killed by being pushed into a hole. And that two early teens sinking to the grass in an embrace is not only to be celebrated but that somehow their act heals the universe? QPB should apologize to its members for even selling this trash.

First off I love the first two books. They were great. This one starts off slow and builds in about the second half, that once I reached that point I could not put it down. Then I am left let down by the build of the mystery of Lyra's choice, which is so lackluster that I wanted to throw the book.

The first book was good, and I was actually more intrigued with the second, but the 3rd book really fell flat. The "climactic" battle between The Kingdom and Asriel's forces was utterly lackluster, and entirely too many mysteries go unanswered, or worse yet, explained in multiple contradictions. And not to give anything away, but Lyra's oh-so-important choice at the end was the lamest freakin' thing I've ever read. If that's all it takes to get your own prophesy, then every girl on the planet must have one floating around somewhere. Series overall: B+, Amber Spyglass: D-
