33 Men

It was one of the most incredible rescues in human history. Trapped more than 2,000 feet underground, the 33 men of the Chilean mine disaster endured brutal conditions for a record-breaking 69 days while rescuers worked feverishly to bring them up alive.

33 Men, by Jonathan Franklin, is the definitive book on the Chilean mine disaster and rescue. On the scene from day one, Franklin was the only print reporter allowed beyond the police tape, and the insight and information in this book is unprecedented. Gripping, raw and packed with never-before-revealed details, it gives us a fascinating look at the rescue, sheds new light on the miners’ ordeal and reveals exactly how they managed to survive—and thrive—against all odds.

Reads like a Thriller
April 05, 2011

If you, like the rest of the world watched the rescue of the Chilean miners in October, 2010 and THINK you know the whole story... Think again and read this. The author is a well-respected journalist who lives in Chile and was granted access that others in the media were not. The book goes back and forth between what is happening above ground and what is happening underground. Before reading this book, I knew that the mine owner was at fault but did not realize how much so, the lack of required safety measures was incredible. These are not 33 "heroes" but 33 real men who in a desperate situation united together and became one. It is also the story of all the people who came together as part of the rescue. There were many who sacrificed their time, money and resources as well as risked their own lives to get these men out. Considering how bad the situation was, it's a miracle to me how any one survived let alone 33. These are real men who were forced to work together to survive and forged a bond that was so strong, that as one character stated. "I could just look in his eyes and I knew what he was thinking." It's also the story of the families who never gave up hope, who stayed on the mountain waiting through the terrible ordeal, some of whom learned of their family member's plight only through watching TV because the mine owners did not contact the families when they found out. It is the story of the many many people trying to help in the situation who would not give up, their determination to get those miners out safely in spite of obstacles that got in the way, was inspiring. This story will make you want to cry, to laugh and to cheer all over again.
