Joe Hill
Author Joe Hill always wanted to be a writer and like most authors he became intimately familiar with rejection slips from publishers. "My real secret to keeping a low profile was failure," he says. Have we mentioned that Joe Hill is a pseudonym? His full name is Joseph Hillstrom King. That last name might sound familiar to any avid reader of horror books because author Joe Hill is none other than the son of horror novelist maestro Stephen King. Hill initially assumed the pseudonym to see how he would fare unencumbered by his father’s famous last name, and for 10 years he got a taste of what it was like to be a struggling author. Then came Heart-Shaped Box, a supernatural thriller about an aging rock singer buying a ghost over the Internet. It became a publishing sensation and pretty soon the cat was out of the bag and there was a new king of horror books in town. Even his agent didn’t know he was the son of Stephen King until after he became famous. Hill proved he wasn’t a one-hit wonder with his second novel, Horns, which the San Francisco Chronicle called “[a] fresh, tough-minded take on what it means to make a deal with the devil and your own worst nature.” Hill has since published Twentieth Century Ghosts, a short story collection, and recently his series of graphic novels, Locke & Key, has been optioned as a TV series. Hill is no stranger to being in front of the camera, either. When he was 10 years old he had a small role in the 1982 film Creepshow, which co-starred and was co-written by his father.
