In January of 1970, The Beatles were putting the last touches on Let It Be; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were wrapping up Déjà Vu; Simon and Garfunkel was unveiling Bridge Over Troubled Water; and James Taylor was a young upstart completing the album Sweet Baby James. Over the next 12 months, the world around them would change irrevocably.
Journalist David Browne tells the story of these four iconic albums in Fire and Rain, a tale that unwinds against an increasingly chaotic backdrop of events: Kent State, the Apollo 13 debacle, bombings by radical left-wing groups, and more. Featuring candid interviews with over 100 luminaries, Browne’s narrative reveals how the ’60s effectively ended and the ’70s began.

I was so glad to find this book and read about the making of these iconic albums, which came out when I was in junior high. I listened to them through high school and college and knew little about the stories behind them, other than I understood the musicians were not getting along well in some cases and the bands were breaking up (I wish CCR had been included, but four albums is plenty for this story).
The backdrop of what was going on politically and socially in America was woven in very well. This whole book was well-crafted as a unified story. Very impressive.
